Renowned Master Craftsman Tom Young has been honoured with a top award marking his long contribution to glassmaking. Tom, co-founder of family firm Angels’ Share Glass which specialises in unique gifts for whisky lovers, was presented with the Provost’s Award for Arts and Culture during a ceremony at Stirling Castle.

The 78-year-old, who lives in Bridge of Allan near Stirling, was given the Stirling Council award in recognition of his achievements in glassblowing since starting out as an apprentice aged 16.

A founding member of the Scottish Glass Society, Tom was one of the first two Scots to be named `Master Craftsman’ by the British Society of Scientific Glassblowers.

During his long career, he has created many innovative glass products by hand using traditional methods including whisky-filled Angels and unique whisky water droppers. He currently runs award-winning company Angels’ Share Glass alongside his daughter Karen Somerville.

Tom said: “I was honoured and delighted to be given this award which was totally unexpected.“I had no idea I was being considered for it and it means a lot to me because it has come from the local community where I have lived, worked and brought up my family over the past 50 years. “Glassmaking is my passion in life and I’m pleased to be able to continue to work and to train apprentices who will help keep the tradition alive.”

Proud daughter Karen says: “We’ve always known that my dad creates amazing products and it’s lovely for him to be recognised in this way and for his fantastic talents to be rewarded.”The biennial Provost’s Awards honour individuals who have made a significant contribution to their community or achieved national recognition in their field over the past two years. Stirling Council Provost Mike Robbins said: “There are so many talented individuals living and working in the Stirling area and often their hard work goes unnoticed or unrewarded.

“It’s so important to recognise these people and to encourage others to replicate their efforts.”

Bridge of Allan-based firm Angels’ Share Glass was founded in 2013 by Tom and Karen and specialises in unusual gifts for whisky lovers including a signature line of glass angels.
