The Whisky Lounge has announced ‘Whisky Festival in a Box’ the first virtual festival from the biggest provider of whisky events in the UK. The Whisky Lounge, who normally run over 200 live whisky events every year, was forced to pivot their entire business online due to the pandemic, suspending hundreds of face to face events. After a successful run of virtual tastings, raising nearly £3,000 for drinks industry charities, The Drinks Trust and The Ben; the small, passionate team of whisky evangelists were intent on creating a fun and inclusive solution to virtually unite whisky lovers everywhere, and so ‘Whisky Festival in a Box’ was born.

The virtual extravaganza, hosted by the founder of The Whisky Lounge, Eddie Ludlow, starts on Friday 16th October and runs to Sunday 18th October, bringing together some of the most exciting names in whisky from around the world, in some cases streaming live from their own distilleries for the ultimate global whisky weekender.

Accessibility is at the heart of The Whisky Lounge’s mantra, aiming to encourage everyone, no matter their whisky experience, to develop their passion for whisky, and for this reason ‘Whisky Festival in a Box’ will be broadcasting live, all weekend, from The Spirit of Yorkshire distillery to encourage whisky fans everywhere, to tune in and learn from the finest industry palates from around the globe.

The Whisky Lounge Founder, and host for the ‘Whisky Festival in a box’, Eddie Ludlow, commented:
“We couldn’t be more excited to present this new concept, our ‘Whisky Festival in a Box’. After 12 years of running whisky events, we’ve definitely had our most challenging year so far, along with the rest of the events industry. We hope whisky enthusiasts up and down the country will join us virtually to celebrate all things whisky as some light relief in these very uncertain times. I hope our amazing new tasting boxes, designed to bring the festival experience home, will help people discover the incredible versatility of whisky, regardless of where they are on their whisky journey.”
The festival comprises 7 themed tasting sessions – Scotch #1, Scotch #2, World, Asian, English, Indie and, for those with a penchant for smoke, a Peated session. Each session has an accompanying whisky tasting box to help bring the festival experience home and all sessions will be hosted by Eddie, alongside iconic distillers and ambassadors who will be introducing their own whiskies live from different corners of the globe.

Whisky brands, hand-picked by Eddie to participate, include some of the most exciting names in world whisky including Kavalan (Taiwan), Nikka (Japan) and Mackmyra (Sweden). The festival will also feature a host of ‘homegrown’ English whiskies from the likes of the Lakes Distillery, Cotswolds and London -based Bimber, as well as Scotch classics including Glenrothes, Mortlach and Glenturret, plus newer Scotch distillers, such as Kingsbarns and Wolfburn. Independent bottlers will also join in the action, with the likes of newcomers Watt Whisky joining Berry Brothers and That Boutique-y Whisky Company for the ultimate indie tasting.

In addition to the tasting sessions, The Whisky Lounge’s YouTube hit lockdown series, ‘Desert Island Drams’, continues during the festival with Eddie Ludlow himself being interviewed by The Spirit of Yorkshire’s whisky director and close friend, Joe Clark. Whisky fans will also be able to test their knowledge with a breakfast ‘Malt-Teasers’ quiz with Inverhouse Distillers and relax with a cocktail session on Saturday evening.

Each ‘Whisky Festival in a Box’ aims to bring the real experience of a festival home, providing official festival ‘SWAG’ to make ticket holders feel like a true whisky aficionado. The box contains:
  • The six whiskies to taste for your chosen festival session (20ml each)

  • A commemorative Glencairn ‘Whisky Festival in a Box’ glass to help you taste like a pro
  • The Whisky Lounge Pin badge
  • A can of Larkfire Wild Water for Whisky
  • A pipette to add the Larkfire Wild Water for Whisky
  • The first 175 people to buy any tasting session pack will also receive 4 mystery drams

For any dream drams, The Whisky Lounge has teamed up with specialist whisky retailer, House of Malt, to offer an exclusive 10% discount on all whiskies purchased during the festival weekend. So if festival attendees enjoy any of the whiskies presented during the sessions, promotional codes will be available (in tasting boxes and through the live streams) to treat themselves to a full bottle!
